Standing Deep Breathing

Bikram yoga begins with the pranyama posture series. The first Bikram Yoga posture is standing deep breathing.

This posture expands the lungs. There is a natural tendency to use less and less of the lungs capacity over time, especially with sedentary habits. When we do not expand our lungs to their maximum capacity regularly, we put ourselves at risk of respiratory aliments like asthma and emphysema or just general shortness of breath. In addition to working out the lungs, this posture benefits all the organs by oxgenating the blood. Filling the blood with fresh oxygen gets your muscles ready to go for the next 25 postures.

Like most poses that are found in the Bikram and Iyengar methods, this posture also has structural alignment benefits.
