Our friend Dave Grillot came to Jungle Jam 2016 to promote a great new project he started called www.karmatribe.com, a website for free exchange of gifts of services and goods. You can register for free and post a favor you are willing to do, or ask for a favor for something you need help with, for instance, language lessons. Karma Tribe is also organizing a recurring beach cleanup here in Jaco. Check it out! Join the group and enjoy the beach, get some exercise, meet people and do a little to make the world a better place. Jaco already has a Blue Flag Ecological Beach Award, but it can always be a little cleaner. Karma Tribe Jaco Beach Cleanup Facebook Group Page
The lineup in Jaco Costa Rica can get pretty crowded on the weekends, but that doesn’t mea
n you will have a hard time getting waves; a lot of people are just floating out there like buoys. I have heard some other surfers refer to buoys with contempt, and it’s true that sometimes I wish there were a few less people do dodge, but
I think there is no shame in being a buoy.
Consider that a lot of surfers in Jaco are beginners and on the weekend, lots of people from San Jose who are just starting surfing and don’t get to practice every day are out there. They have paddled out to the lineup where they have a chance to catch a wave and where they can see up close what other surfers are doing and what works and what doesn’t. But they have enough sense to know they are not ready to charge in a crowd, so they are just sitting their floating and that’s fine by me. Better to be a buoy than a kook!
If you watch and wait, eventually you will find an opportunity where you are confident you can take off and get a good ride without endangering your fellow surfers. Pura Vida!

This surfing video was shot about 1 mile from Jaco hotel DoceLunas on Jaco beach on December 4th with a small swell. The swell was around 12 second period, 4 foot open ocean height coming from around 210 degrees according to local surf forecasts for Jaco. The waves were around waist high mostly.
This video was originally shot in HD but we stored in in lowres format so it will stream quickly on youtube.
You can check out more about surfing in Jaco on our blog topic page for Jaco surf. Whether you are a beginner or an expert, you can rent our GoPro camera and make your own surf video when you come visit us at Jaco hotel DoceLunas.
Check out this video clip of Alpha Blondy playing Led Zepplin’s Black Dog at Jaco hotel DoceLunas in May 2009. What a show! The sound is not so great on this video but you can tell they went to town on the production and his band, the Solar System, is tight.
Check back in a few days.
We will be posting more video of Alpha Blondy live at DoceLunas soon.
Every friday the Jaco Hotel Blog stops by the farmers market. Restaurant DoceLunas has its own local purveyors of fruits and vegetables who deliver to the hotel, so the hotel doesn’s shop at the market, but its employees do. The market is pretty comparable to the grocery store in prices, but the produce is fresher and more locally sourced. While its not cheaper than the grocery store,
its pretty cheap. A lot of fruits and veg are less than $1 a pound. In the photo you can see my haul of tiny potatoes (which were quite well washed) giant carrot, garlic, ginger, and broccoli only cost about $4.
Perhaps the best part about the farmers market: its located on an estuary and there is a sandy spot on the other side of it where a small crocodile can often be seen sunning.
I have to get a picture of him for youse. Meanwhile, let me know if there is anything you would like
me talk about in the blog here and I will do it. You can reach me at chrisc at docelunas.com.
Til next, adios from the finest of Jaco Hotels, Jaco Hotel DoceLunas
